Zany Half Pint-o-Rum Race Wraps Up Ancient Mariners Season

The Ancient Mariners Sailing Society of San Diego ran their final regatta of 2022 on sunny Saturday, December 10. The wild and wacky Half Pint-o-Rum Race boasts many shenanigans not normally seen in your typical yacht race.
No need to pull out your credit card to enter the race. Simply hand off a fifth of good rum to the admiral — er, commodore — before the start. (A fifth? Not a half pint? Must be inflation!) Here Butcher Boy pays her entry fee.
The skipper (or designated crewmember) from each boat in the Racing Class must paddle, row or swim onto and off the beach before the start and at the finish. This kneeling, kayak-paddling SUPper is from Dauntless.
The beach crew’s craft must be hoisted aboard or taken in tow. This is the New Zealand 37 Lola. Three generations of Spriggs were on board: father Robert, son Morgan and Cam (lifting the wooden rowboat).
Some swimmers wore wetsuits, but trunking it was an option in San Diego’s 60º South Bay waters. This is Chimaera’s finish swimmer, Fernando Caceres, MD, DDS.
First, he found a new-to-him sailboat in the pages of 'Latitude 38' and, later, John Daughters opened another issue of 'Latitude 38' to find a winning, blue-colored "Golden Ticket."
